It is not an exaggeration to say the MA-1 was a fully complete jacket design that could scarcely have been improved upon. Extant examples of original MA-1 jackets worn in combat show evidence of cleaning and the long history of its wearer. The character of these jackets grew over the years through the daily use by the aircrews who wore them. The smudges of soiling, scratches, stains and subtle color changes from sunlight fading, all form part of the mystique and charm of these original combat-worn jacket. Our Buzz Rickson’s MA-1, the 83rd FIS version, is made with modern technology to create this perfectly aged look found on those cherished, combat-worn jackets. The 83rd FIS was based at Hamilton AFB in California and was mainly active as the backbone of the US air defense through the Cold War era, equipped with the fighter interceptor F-101B Voodoo.
